AAHMS welcomes National Science and Research Priorities and National Science Statement

The Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences (AAHMS) welcomes the Australian Government’s release of the new National Science and Research Priorities and the National Science Statement.

As a leading body representing the health and medical sciences community, AAHMS is particularly encouraged by the government’s recognition of the critical role that research and innovation play in improving public health outcomes, advancing medical breakthroughs, and ensuring the wellbeing of all Australians.

The Academy’s President, Professor Louise Baur AM FAHMS said: “The updated National Science and Research Priorities are a testament to the government’s understanding of the importance of a robust and forward-thinking research agenda. We are especially pleased to see science and research outcomes that are essential to healthcare, disease prevention, and the overall quality of life for Australians.”

“AAHMS is committed to supporting these efforts by fostering collaboration across the health and medical sciences sector, promoting interdisciplinary research, and ensuring that evidence-based knowledge informs public policy”

AAHMS has long advocated for a science and research agenda that prioritises the health and wellbeing of the population. The Academy remains committed to working closely with the government, industry, and the broader research community to realise the goals outlined in these foundational documents.

“We look forward to contributing to the implementation of these priorities and ensuring that Australia remains a leader in health and medical research,” Professor Baur added.

“AAHMS will continue to champion initiatives that align with these national priorities, fostering innovation and excellence in health and medical sciences.”

The Academy acknowledges the extensive consultations led by Chief Scientist, Dr Cathy Foley, and encourages all stakeholders in the health and medical sciences to engage with the newly released priorities and statement, and to collaborate in building a healthier, more resilient Australia.
