AAHMS welcomes appointment of Professor Michael Kidd as Chief Medical Officer

The Australian Academy of Health and Medical Science (AAHMS) warmly welcomes the appointment of Academy Fellow Professor Michael Kidd AO FAHMS as Australia’s Chief Medical Officer (CMO).

“Professor Kidd’s international reputation and outstanding career in general practice, primary care, and health policy leadership makes him exceptionally well-placed to lead in this critical role,” said Academy President Professor Louise Baur AM. “His unwavering commitment to public service and dedication to improving health outcomes embody the values we uphold at the Academy.”

Professor Kidd’s leadership and expertise have been demonstrated on the global stage, most recently as Professor of Global Primary Care and Future Health Systems at the University of Oxford and Director of the International Centre for Future Health Systems at the University of New South Wales (UNSW). His extensive experience in government, including his roles as Deputy Chief Medical Officer and Principal Medical Advisor during the COVID-19 pandemic reflect his capacity to navigate complex health challenges with clarity and vision.

“His combination of clinical practice, research excellence, and policy insight is precisely what is needed to guide Australia’s health system through current and future challenges” added Professor Baur. “We look forward to continuing to work with Professor Kidd on the most pressing challenges facing our health system in his new role”

The Academy looks forward to supporting Professor Kidd as he drives forward initiatives that strengthen Australia’s health system and enhance the nation’s capacity and capability in responding to future health threats.
