On 26 May 2023, the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences and Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia (ASSA) made a joint submission to the second consultation process for Measuring What Matters.

The Academies support the Australian Government’s initiative to develop a stand-alone Measuring What Matters Statement.

A wellbeing economy approach is an opportunity to improve policy design, transparency and accountability based on a clear and contemporary understanding of what progress means to Australian society. Importantly, an effective national framework must improve wellbeing, not just measure it.

The submission builds on our respective contributions to the initial consultation process, discussion at the recent ASSA roundtable Developments in work and wellbeing for contemporary Australia, and a consultation session with Fellows from both Academies.

The submission sets out nine key principles that are intended to support the decision-making process relating to the development of the wellbeing framework.

The full joint submission is available for download below.
