The Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences (AAHMS) welcomes the Federal Government’s Medical Science Co-investment Plan, which outlines how government and industry can work together to grow opportunities in medical manufacturing in Australia.

AAHMS has been a strong advocate for building Australia’s sovereign capability in medical manufacturing. The Academy is pleased to see that this is the first of seven co-investment plans the Government will deliver across the National Reconstruction Fund priority investment areas.

AAHMS has long advocated for better coordination and strategic investment across the industry and health interface to drive economic growth, create jobs and attract commercial investment.

The Academy’s contributions to the House Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Resources inquiry into developing advanced manufacturing in Australia highlighted the potential for Australia to build a thriving advanced manufacturing economy.

AAHMS welcomes this new plan as an important step towards this goal.

Quotes attributable to Academy President Professor Louise Baur AM FAHMS

“The Academy welcomes the Federal Government’s initiative to support medical manufacturing in Australia, understanding it as a significant move towards bolstering our nation’s capabilities in this vital sector.”

“Australia has many of the prerequisites necessary to make progress, such as a highly skilled workforce, excellent tertiary education, and high-quality research institutions. This plan will help us leverage those capabilities.”

Quotes attributable to Academy Interim Chief Executive Officer Khaled Chakli

“Advanced manufacturing in the medical sciences requires big and bold investments. This plan helps us work toward them.”

“While this co-investment plan is welcomed, it is an economic and strategic imperative that we develop a pathway to increasing Australia’s gross expenditure on R&D to 3% of GDP as a matter of priority. Only then can we truly leverage our world-class research and innovation to advance national prosperity and global competitiveness.”
