In March 2023, the Academy provided a submission to the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Resources’ inquiry into developing advanced manufacturing in Australia.
Our submission focused on addressing the inquiry’s Terms of Reference in relation to advanced manufacturing in the medical sciences in Australia and was informed by input from Fellows of the Academy.
As a high-income country, Australia meets many of the prerequisites necessary for a thriving advanced manufacturing economy – for instance, a highly skilled workforce, excellent tertiary education, high quality research institutions and government support for innovation. However, in the medical sciences, we are yet to take full advantage of our position and use the foundations we already have in place to propel our advanced manufacturing capabilities forward.
Our submission highlights opportunities and barriers for advanced manufacturing in the field of health and medical sciences that could be explored, including:
- Supply chain disruptions
- Investment in research and development (R&D)
- Financial incentives, such as tax incentives
- Non-financial incentives, such as a stable funding landscape and improved industry-academia collaboration
- A globally competitive workforce
