The Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences recently welcomed Professor John Prins FAHMS to its Executive as Vice-President, following his election at the AAHMS Annual General Meeting.
Professor Prins is the Executive Director of Health Translation Queensland, one of the 12 NHMRC-accredited Research Translation Centres, and Chair of the Australian Health Research Alliance, as well an active clinician-scientist, and a respected thought leader in diabetes and endocrinology.
He has wide experience on grant review and advisory committees for NHMRC, non-government organisations and industry.
Professor Prins was elected to the Academy in 2015, and became Director in 2023.
“I’m so pleased to join the Academy’s Executive as Vice-President and take on a more active role in furthering the Academy’s goals of advancing health and medical science to improve health for all,” he said.
“The Academy has several exciting projects coming up as we work to address urgent and important health issues facing society, as well as our initiatives to nurture future leaders and celebrate the outstanding research and innovation happening in Australian science.”
Professor Maree Teesson AC FAHMS FASSA was elected as a Council member at the AGM.
Professor Teesson is Director of the Matilda Centre and an NHMRC Leadership Fellow at the University of Sydney, as well as Chair of Australia’s Mental Health Think Tank.
Professor Teesson has made a major contribution to Australia’s health and medical research effort in the field of mental health and substance use. In particular, she is known nationally and internationally for her research on the comorbidity between mental health and substance use disorders.
She was elected as an Academy Fellow in 2015.
