Inclusive Leadership Mentoring Program

The Academy’s Inclusive Leadership Mentoring Program supports the career progression of mid-career women in health and medical research while developing the inclusive leadership capabilities of senior sector leaders.

This cross-organisational program connects mentees with mentors from different workplaces across the health and medical research ecosystem, fostering fresh perspectives and broader professional networks.

Who is this program for?

Note: At present, this program is available in NSW only, reflecting its origins as a Franklin Women initiative. We are exploring opportunities to expand the program to other areas of the country.

The program is designed for two groups of participants:

Mentees are mid-career women (typically around 8–10 years’ professional experience, or university Level C equivalent) whose work contributes to improving health outcomes in any discipline – from laboratory and clinical research to public health, health technology and medical engineering.

Mentors are experienced leaders of any gender with a minimum of 15 years’ professional experience and a current leadership role in the sector, whether in a research, academic or executive capacity.

This is a cross-organisational Mentoring Program which means workplaces within the health and medical research ecosystem sign up to take part and nominate their staff/students who will go through the Program as a mentee or mentor.

If you are interested in participating as a mentee or mentor, please enquire within your organisation to see if they are a participating in the Program.

What does the program involve?

The six-month program includes approximately 6–8 informal mentoring meetings between each mentee-mentor pair, alongside a series of facilitated workshops and events. These include both in-person sessions (held in Sydney) and virtual sessions via video call. All participants need to be available for workshops and mentoring meetings for the full duration of the program.

Depending on your goals, the program can offer:

  • One-on-one mentoring from an experienced leader outside your usual networks, bringing independent perspective and fresh insight to your career challenges.
  • A series of facilitated workshops – covering signature strengths, resilience, career insights and inclusive leadership – delivered by experienced executive coaches from Serendis Leadership.
  • For mentors, dedicated sessions on mentoring techniques and strategies to positively shift inclusive leadership culture within your own organisation and the wider sector.
  • Practical frameworks for career development and leadership progression, with opportunities to exchange feedback and learn from a panel of senior leaders.
  • Connection to a cross-organisational cohort of peers and leaders, supported by an online mentoring platform throughout the program.
