Professor Martin is a clinician scientist ophthalmologist who has pioneered new strategies to protect and regenerate the optic nerve in glaucoma, the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. He was first to demonstrate gene therapy and stem cell therapy could protect the optic nerve in experimental glaucoma, and his gene therapy for glaucoma is progressing towards human clinical trials. He leads Australia’s largest eye research institute, has particular expertise in research translation and commercialisation and is co-founder of five biotech start-up companies. He has multiple leadership responsibilities nationally and internationally, and a busy clinical practice predominantly in the public sector.
