Twelve Fellows from the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences have been honoured for their significant service to the community.

Fellows were recognised not only for their outstanding contributions to the health and medical sciences, but also for their work as mentors, advocates and community leaders.

The Academy warmly congratulations them on this well-deserved recognition.

Two Fellows were named as Companions (AC) in the General Division of the Order of Australia:

• Emeritus Professor Caroline Bower AC FAHMS, for eminent service to medical research as a paediatric epidemiologist, particularly in birth defects and early childhood development, to health and welfare through public health initiatives, and to medical education.
• Professor Glenda Halliday AC FAA FAHMS, for eminent service to medical research in the field of neurodegenerative disorders, including the development of revised diagnostic criteria for Parkinson’s disease, and as a mentor.

Seven Fellows were named Officers (AO) in the General Division of the Order of Australia:

• Scientia Professor Louisa Degenhardt AO FASSA FAHMS, for distinguished service to medical research, particularly addiction and mental disorders, to psychology, and to professional associations.
• Professor Jane Gunn AO FAHMS, for distinguished service to medical administration in leadership roles, to tertiary education and research, and to the community.
• Professor Jane Hall AO FASSA FAHMS for distinguished service to the social sciences, to academic leadership and mentoring, and to national and international associations.
• Professor Michael Horowitz AO FAHMS, For distinguished service to endocrinology, particularly diabetes, as a researcher, educator and clinician.
• Professor Michael Kidd AO FAHMS, for distinguished service in medical administration and community health, to primary care leadership, and to tertiary education.
• Professor Grant McArthur AO FAHMS, for distinguished service to medicine as a clinician scientist through melanoma and cancer research, and to leadership roles.
• Professor John Zalcberg AO FAHMS, for distinguished service to oncology as a clinician researcher, and as an advocate for those living with cancer.

Three Fellows were appointed as Members in the General Division of the Order of Australia (AM):

• Professor Melanie Bahlo AM FAHMS, for significant service to genetic and infectious disease research, and to public health.
• Professor Rodney Hicks AM FAHMS, for significant service to nuclear medicine through a range of international and national roles.
• Distinguished Professor Justine Smith AM FAHMS, for significant service to ophthalmology, particularly research and education.
