Academy stands with the Therapeutic Goods Administration and its staff

The Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences (AAHMS) stands with the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) and the crucial work of its staff.

As the nation’s medicines regulator, the TGA provides policy makers with rigorous, independent and evidence-based assessment of new medicines and vaccines in Australia.

Professor Ingrid Scheffer AO, Academy President, said that the TGA has the full support of the Academy, and that their assessments and recommendations have been essential in Australia’s pandemic response.

“There has never been a more important time to put our trust and confidence in this eminent organisation whose focus is the health of Australians,” Professor Scheffer said.

“My colleagues and I were deeply saddened to hear the reports of severe harassment and intimidation against the TGA leadership and staff.”

The Academy condemns the threats and online harassment of TGA staff, which seeks to undermine their essential role in navigating Australia through this difficult time.

The people of Australia can put their trust in the TGA and their ongoing role in protecting the health of the whole population.

Many people from leading evidence-based health and medical organisations, including our Fellows, have also signed the Public Health Association Australia’s statement of support of TGA, which you can read on their website.
