The Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences (AAHMS) welcomes the Australian Government’s establishment of the Climate & Health Expert Advisory Group (CHEAG). This initiative is a significant step towards safeguarding public health from the adverse effects of climate change.
AAHMS Fellow, Professor Jennifer Martin FAHMS, will be a key member of this expert group. Her involvement ensures that the perspectives and insights of the health and research community are central to the development and implementation of the government’s climate and health policies.
For years, AAHMS has been at the forefront of highlighting the profound and far-reaching health impacts of climate change. In 2020 and 2021, the Academy organized a series of roundtables and interviews, bringing together leading experts from health and medicine to identify and scrutinize the health threats posed by climate change.
In April 2022, AAHMS released a statement commending the Australian Government’s commitment to achieving net zero emissions by 2050. This statement outlined critical priority actions to address and mitigate the health risks associated with climate change.
The Academy remains dedicated to informing and supporting the Australian Government in integrating health and medical considerations into its National Health and Climate Strategy. We look forward to continuing our collaborative efforts to protect and promote public health in the face of climate change.
